On 8 September 2022, Elizabeth II, Queen of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms, the longest-living and longest-reigning British monarch, died at the age of 96 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. Her death, announced at 18:30 BST.

Early life

Elizabeth was the elder daughter of Prince Albert, duke of York, and his wife, Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. As the child of a younger son of King George V, the young Elizabeth had little prospect of acceding to the throne until her uncle, Edward VIII (afterward duke of Windsor), abdicated in her father’s favour on December 11, 1936, at which time her father became King George VI and she became heir presumptive. The princess’s education was supervised by her mother, who entrusted her daughters to a governess, Marion Crawford; the princess was also grounded in history by C.H.K. Marten, afterward provost of Eton College, and had instruction from visiting teachers in music and languages. During World War II she and her sister, Princess Margaret Rose, perforce spent much of their time safely away from the London blitz and separated from their parents, living mostly at Balmoral Castle in Scotland and at the Royal Lodge, Windsor, and Windsor Castle.

Early in 1947 Princess Elizabeth went with the king and queen to South Africa. After her return there was an announcement of her betrothal to her distant cousin Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten of the Royal Navy, formerly Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark. The marriage took place in Westminster Abbey on November 20, 1947. On the eve of the wedding her father, the king, conferred upon the bridegroom the titles of duke of Edinburgh, earl of Merioneth, and Baron Greenwich. They took residence at Clarence House in London. Their first child, Prince Charles (Charles Philip Arthur George), was born November 14, 1948, at Buckingham Palace.

British royal family members receive new titles

Royal family members have received new titles after the death of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8. Following the demise of Britain’s longest-reigning monarch at the Balmoral Castle, Prince Charles has finally become king of the United Kingdom and 14 other realms, ending a wait of more than 70 years.

Apart from Prince Charles, his wife Camilla — the Duchess of Cornwall — will now be known as Queen Consort, the King’s eldest son — Prince William — now the heir to the throne, and his wife — Kate Middleton — have also updated their official Twitter account to reflect the change in titles.

Before queen’s death, Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton’s were called as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Now, the couple has received the title — the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge.

In addition to these titles, Prince Harry and wife Meghan Markle will retain their titles as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, however, their son Archie and daughter Lilibet could possibly become a prince and princess.

Prince Charles has been caught between a modernizing monarchy, trying to find its place in a fast-changing and more egalitarian society, while maintaining traditions that give the institution its allure.

Mourners wait for hours ,miles to farewell Queen

As the coffin of Queen Elizabeth II lay in state at Westminster Hall on Thursday, a line stretched more than 4 miles along the River Thames. The U.K. government warned that it could grow to 10 miles long as hundreds of thousands of people wait to pay their final farewells to Britain’s longest-serving monarch ahead of Monday’s planned state funeral.

Dressed in tails and equipped with a glass of white wine and not much else, Englishman Darren Wood said he was all set to wait through the night to see off his late queen at Westminster Hall, a cavernous space first built in 1097.

“It’s my way of showing respect to the queen,” said Mr. Wood, taking a sip of wine in the late afternoon sunshine on Wednesday. “If I miss the last train home, I suppose I shall just wander the streets and take it all in.”

The British are known for their love of getting in line, which in Britain has long been called a “queue,” from the French word for tail. It was once said “an Englishman, even if he is alone, forms an orderly queue of one.”

Where Will Queen Elizabeth be laid to rest when she dies?

Her Royal Majesty will be laid to rest in the King George VI Memorial Chapel within St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.
